Celebrating Twin City Seed as Minnesota’s Best!

Twin City Seed (TCS) is grateful to announce Star Tribune’s Minnesota’s Best has named the agricultural and grass seed and erosion-control company 2021’s Best Seed Dealer!

“We are very pleased by the acknowledgment from Minnesota’s Best as it comes from our customers,” said Paul Kubista, owner of Twin City Seed. “It’s an honor that so many people

voted for us. I think it is a tribute to our employees and the relationships they’ve established with our customers, and to the quality of our products.”

The Star Tribune Reader’s Choice Award recognizes the best Minnesota businesses from more than 380 categories, including professional services, restaurants and cultural institutions. Any local business from one of these categories can be nominated by employees, customers or fans. Nominated businesses are vetted, verifying that they provide the service for which they are nominated and that they serve Minnesota. Then voters are encouraged to vote once per day for a period spanning 26 days.

“We have been working with TCS for three years. We found that not only can we get high-quality seed from them, but that we can get custom seed mixes at lower minimum quantities

than other seed distributors,” said Nathan Peabody, turf and garden director at Mangold Horticulture. “That makes a real difference to us as we perform landscaping installations and

management for high-end residential projects, and our reputation is dependent on the best results. We have no interest in the low-quality, cheap stuff you get at the big box retailers. As a bonus, the TCS staff is always super responsive when I order… sometimes even faster than I need it. It’s nice to have someone good to rely on when you’re in a pinch.”

Twin City Seed was founded in 1992 by John Glattly. Current owner Paul Kubista joined TCS in 2011 after he received his Bachelor of Science degree in both agronomy and turf management from the University of Minnesota and worked as an assistant superintendent at Woodhill Country Club.

“I am very grateful to John for the foundation he established at Twin City Seed,” said Kubista. “He has always been described as a Veteran Seedman and his experience in the Oregon seed business and then in this market allowed him to establish TCS as a successful wholesale distributor of turfgrass seed. Over the years, the company added many new seeds to sell such as Farm Seeds, Native Seeds and Erosion-control Products to name a few.”

Paul and his wife Amy took over as owners in 2016 and have cultivated an increase to Twin City Seed’s customer base of 15 percent and sales by 25 percent. They’ve added a variety of new products, most notably the Bee Lawn Mix and the TWCA (Turfgrass Water Conservation) seed mixes, New Wildflower mixes and Native seed mixes.

“We continually look at new markets. We want to be the leader in the industry. Our employees are very motivated to grow their knowledge and to be the best.”

That drive to expand their knowledge and products is something their clients also appreciate.

“Oh yes, we love Twin City Seed,” said Shay Lunseth, owner of Organic Lawn by Lunseth. “I appreciate that I can ask for specific disease-resistant varieties and always receive several options. They custom blend our house seed each season and offer great advice on better varieties available. I like that they know their seed suppliers, current NTEP data and the latest cultivars that do well in Minnesota. I also appreciate that they’ve been promoting their bee lawn and TWCA mixes and hope that they expand their education efforts to increase awareness of the options available for low-maintenance lawns. Twin City Seed is my go-to seed source, and they have the most knowledgeable and friendly staff!”

Winners were announced on the Star Tribune’s Minnesota’s Best website and in the publication’s Minnesota’s Best Magazine which was distributed in the Sunday Star Tribune on August 1. Read the article about Twin City Seed here.
